TRUNG THU OR MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL
This festival recounts the legend of CUOI, a herd boy (except that he had only one or two buffaloes to herd) who one day planted a banyan tree in his yard. He jokingly told his mom not to throw any waste at the tree. As she did it anyway, the tree slowly uprooted itself to try to get away. Cuoi hung on to its roots as the tree flew off the ground. It ended on the moon, which became Cuoi's new home.

On clear days, people on earth could see the shadows of Cuoi and the banyan tree against the backdrop of the moon. He was always alone looking at the stars in the sky and sometimes waving at the people on earth.

Every year during the mid-autumn festival (which falls between August and September), children light up lanterns and go on a procession to show Cuoi the way back to earth.

Adults, on the other hand, would taste mooncakes (square cakes filled with mungbean paste and other ingredients) and savor tea while watching children going on procession.

PS. Cuoi is, according to our legends, Vietnam's first astronaut. For further details about Cuoi, see my upcoming book Vietnamese Legends From 1321 to Today (2012).

See what the life of a herd boy is in The Boy and the Bull in the Youth's section.
